This page started as a simple listing of the birthstones associated with each month of the year. As time went on, and more and more cultures and groups of people came forward with lists based upon their own personal beliefs and ideas, this pages started growing.

That caused a problem. Not every culture lists their birthstones for each month, or at least not a calendar month. Some use astrological months, some are based on the moon while others are based on the sun. The Chineses Birthstones are based on a yearly cycle, complicating things even more.

But we really wanted to keep our month based format so in the cases where the Birthstones by Month doesn't work because of an astrological based time frame, we simply listed 2 or more listings for that month so the entire month is included.

So our birthstones for each month listing allows you to see all designated birthstones for any one month by clicking on that particular month. No more looking through a thousand different pages seeking out the information you need, we've got it all right here in one easy to read format.

Notes on Celtic Birthstones

Celtic Birthstones are assigned based on a calendar devised by the Druids which consists of 13 Astrological months.

Trees are sacred to the Druids and over time a Tree was assigned to rule over each of the 13 Astrological months. We have included the tree for each time period, along with the Gaelic name and the stone that rules.

Notes on Modern Birthstones

This is the only so called "official" list of birthstones. The American National Association of Jewelers of America adopted the modern list of birthstones in 1912 in an attempt to standardize the list so that all jewelers would be selling the same product for the same month.

It is important to note however that the gemstone Tanzanite was added to the list in 2002 by the American Gem Trade Association for the month of December. Tanzanite was only discovered in 1967 and can be found in only one place in the world, the area for which it was named, Tanzania.

Notes on Traditional Birthstones

The traditional list is based more on what the common man sees as being the correct stone for a given period versus the modern list being what businesses want the gifts to be.

Since the public is comprised of people from various cultures, the traditional list tends to overlap with some of the ancient lists because people brought their own favorites from their homelands and they were slowly worked into the lists.

In my personal opinion this gives the best overall list because it has input from so many different cultures all rolled into a list everyone is happy with.

Notes on Talismanic Birthstones

Talismans are objects believed to contain magical power to protect the owner from evil. Choosing a gemstone of the type that aligns with a persons astrological sign is believed to keep the protective energies closer to the owner, thereby making the talisman stronger for that person than one made of some other object.
